Las formas verbales
Práctica de conjugación · pp. 25–26
The workbook table has six columns but asks for eight forms — the pretérito/imperfecto and futuro/condicional columns each hold two. Each verb on your sheet has a twin below that follows the exact same pattern — work out the twin, then do the real one the same way.
| presente | pretérito | imperfecto | pres. perfecto | futuro | condicional | pres. subj. | pas. subj. | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| oír yo like caer | oigo | oí | oía | he oído | oiré | oiría | oiga | oyera |
| poder nosotros like estar | podemos | pudimos | podíamos | hemos podido | podremos | podríamos | podamos | pudiéramos |
| levantarse tú like llevarse | te levantas | te levantaste | te levantabas | te has levantado | te levantarás | te levantarías | te levantes | te levantaras |
| ofrecer ella like parecer | ofrece | ofreció | ofrecía | ha ofrecido | ofrecerá | ofrecería | ofrezca | ofreciera |
| vender ellos like meter | venden | vendieron | vendían | han vendido | venderán | venderían | vendan | vendieran |
| comprar Ud. like tomar | compra | compró | compraba | ha comprado | comprará | compraría | compre | comprara |
Ud. always uses the él/ella form and Uds. the ellos form. With a reflexive verb like levantarse, the pronoun (me, te, se, nos, se) sits right before the conjugated verb in every tense.
1.1 Presente de indicativo
Drop -ar/-er/-ir and add the endings.
| -ar · cantar | -er · comer | -ir · vivir | |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | canto | como | vivo |
| tú | cantas | comes | vives |
| él / ella / Ud. | canta | come | vive |
| nosotros | cantamos | comemos | vivimos |
| vosotros | cantáis | coméis | vivís |
| ellos / Uds. | cantan | comen | viven |
Irregular yo forms to know cold:
- oíroigo
- hacerhago
- ponerpongo
- salirsalgo
- tenertengo
- traertraigo
- venirvengo
- decirdigo
- conducirconduzco
- conocerconozco
- sabersé
- estarestoy
Stem-changers change in every form except nosotros/vosotros (the “boot”): querer → quiero (e→ie), volver → vuelvo (o→ue), pedir → pido (e→i).
1.2 Pretérito
One completed action or a sequence of them. Regular endings carry written accents in yo and él.
| -ar · cantar | -er / -ir · comer | irregular stem · tener | |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | canté | comí | tuve |
| tú | cantaste | comiste | tuviste |
| él / ella / Ud. | cantó | comió | tuvo |
| nosotros | cantamos | comimos | tuvimos |
| vosotros | cantasteis | comisteis | tuvisteis |
| ellos / Uds. | cantaron | comieron | tuvieron |
Irregular stems (use the endings in the third column):
- estarestuv-
- tenertuv-
- poderpud-
- ponerpus-
- sabersup-
- haberhub-
- quererquis-
- hacerhic- (hizo)
- venirvin-
- decirdij-
- traertraj-
- ir / serfui, fue…
- j-stems take -eron, not -ieron: dijeron, trajeron.
- i → y between vowels: oír → oyó, oyeron; leer → leyó. The rest get accents: leí, leíste, leímos.
- -ir stem-changers change only in él and ellos: pidió, durmieron, sintió.
- Spelling in yo: busqué, llegué, empecé.
- dar → di, dio and ver → vi, vio — no accents.
1.3 Imperfecto
Background, description, habits (“used to”), and actions in progress (“was ‑ing”).
| -ar · cantar | -er / -ir · comer | |
|---|---|---|
| yo | cantaba | comía |
| tú | cantabas | comías |
| él / ella / Ud. | cantaba | comía |
| nosotros | cantábamos | comíamos |
| vosotros | cantabais | comíais |
| ellos / Uds. | cantaban | comían |
Only three irregulars: ser → era, ir → iba, ver → veía.
1.4 Presente perfecto y pluscuamperfecto
haber + participio. The participle is -ado for -ar verbs and -ido for -er/-ir, and it never changes after haber.
| “has done” | “had done” | |
|---|---|---|
| yo | he cantado | había cantado |
| tú | has cantado | habías cantado |
| él / ella / Ud. | ha cantado | había cantado |
| nosotros | hemos cantado | habíamos cantado |
| vosotros | habéis cantado | habíais cantado |
| ellos / Uds. | han cantado | habían cantado |
Irregular participles:
- abrirabierto
- cubrircubierto
- decirdicho
- escribirescrito
- hacerhecho
- morirmuerto
- ponerpuesto
- romperroto
- vervisto
- volvervuelto
- resolverresuelto
- describirdescrito
When the stem ends in a vowel, the í gets an accent: leído, creído, oído, reído.
1.5 Futuro y condicional
Add the endings to the whole infinitive. Same endings for -ar, -er and -ir. “Will” is future; “would” is conditional.
| futuro · “will” | condicional · “would” | |
|---|---|---|
| yo | cantaré | cantaría |
| tú | cantarás | cantarías |
| él / ella / Ud. | cantará | cantaría |
| nosotros | cantaremos | cantaríamos |
| vosotros | cantaréis | cantaríais |
| ellos / Uds. | cantarán | cantarían |
Irregular stems — the same stem works for both tenses:
- decirdir-
- hacerhar-
- poderpodr-
- ponerpondr-
- quererquerr-
- sabersabr-
- salirsaldr-
- tenertendr-
- venirvendr-
- haberhabr-
- cabercabr-
- valervaldr-
1.6 Presente de subjuntivo
Start from the yo present, drop the -o, and switch to the “opposite” vowel: -ar verbs take e endings, -er/-ir verbs take a endings. That’s why oigo → oiga and ofrezco → ofrezca.
| -ar · cantar | -ir · oír | -er · ofrecer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | cante | oiga | ofrezca |
| tú | cantes | oigas | ofrezcas |
| él / ella / Ud. | cante | oiga | ofrezca |
| nosotros | cantemos | oigamos | ofrezcamos |
| vosotros | cantéis | oigáis | ofrezcáis |
| ellos / Uds. | canten | oigan | ofrezcan |
- Spelling: -car → -que (busque), -gar → -gue (llegue), -zar → -ce (empiece).
- -ir stem-changers also change in nosotros: durmamos, pidamos, sintamos.
- When: after a wish, emotion, doubt or impersonal expression + que with a new subject: Quiero que me ayudes.
1.7 Pasado de subjuntivo
Take the ellos preterite, drop -ron, add -ra endings. Every irregularity in the preterite carries over.
| cantaron → canta- | pudieron → pudie- | oyeron → oye- | |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | cantara | pudiera | oyera |
| tú | cantaras | pudieras | oyeras |
| él / ella / Ud. | cantara | pudiera | oyera |
| nosotros | cantáramos | pudiéramos | oyéramos |
| vosotros | cantarais | pudierais | oyerais |
| ellos / Uds. | cantaran | pudieran | oyeran |
Use it with the same triggers as the present subjunctive when the main verb is in the past or conditional: Quería que me ayudaras.
Pronombres y mandatos
Traducciones: Rechazarlos · pp. 26–27
The translation exercise runs one sentence through every tense. The only things that change are the verb form and where the pronoun goes — see the parallel example in 2.4.
| directo | indirecto | reflexivo | |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | me | me | me |
| tú | te | te | te |
| él / ella / Ud. | lo / la | le (se) | se |
| nosotros | nos | nos | nos |
| vosotros | os | os | os |
| ellos / Uds. | los / las | les (se) | se |
2.1 Where the pronoun goes
- Before a single conjugated verb. Te llama. Ya me lo había dicho. Quiero que nos ayudes.
- With an infinitive or -ndo: before the conjugated verb or attached to the end. Te está buscando = Está buscándote. Se lo queremos enviar = Queremos enviárselo.
- Affirmative commands: always attached. Ayúdame. Levántate. Digámoselo.
- Negative commands: always before. No me ayuden. No te levantes.
2.2 Two pronouns at once
- Indirect before direct (think RID: reflexive, indirect, direct): Me lo dio.
- le / les → se in front of lo, la, los, las: Se lo queremos enviar, never “le lo.”
2.3 Mandatos
| afirmativo | negativo | |
|---|---|---|
| tú | ayuda = él form | no ayudes = subj. |
| Ud. | ayude | no ayude |
| Uds. | ayuden | no ayuden |
| nosotros | ayudemos “let’s” | no ayudemos |
Irregular affirmative tú commands:
- decirdi
- hacerhaz
- irve
- ponerpon
- salirsal
- sersé
- tenerten
- venirven
Nosotros commands drop their final -s before nos or se: levantemos + nos → levantémonos, digamos + se lo → digámoselo. Before any other pronoun the -s stays: escribámosles.
2.4 A parallel example: he writes to them
Same thirteen steps as the worksheet, with escribir a instead of hablar a. Once this makes sense, do the worksheet the same way.
| # | English | Español | forma |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | He writes to them. | Les escribe. | presente |
| 2 | He is writing to them. | Les está escribiendo. / Está escribiéndoles. | progresivo |
| 3 | He wrote to them. | Les escribió. | pretérito |
| 4 | He used to write to them. | Les escribía. | imperfecto |
| 5 | He has written to them. | Les ha escrito. | pres. perfecto |
| 6 | He had already written to them. | Ya les había escrito. | pluscuamperfecto |
| 7 | He will write to them. | Les escribirá. | futuro |
| 8 | He would write to them. | Les escribiría. | condicional |
| 9 | I want him to write to them. | Quiero que les escriba. | pres. subj. |
| 10 | I wanted him to write to them. | Quería que les escribiera. | pas. subj. |
| 11 | Write to them (tú). | Escríbeles. | mandato tú |
| 12 | Don’t write to them (Uds.). | No les escriban. | mandato Uds. |
| 13 | Let’s write to them. | Escribámosles. | mandato nosotros |

3.1 Concordancia
Adjectives match the noun in gender and number: la jefa exigente, los amigos chistosos.
- -o adjectives have four forms: culto, culta, cultos, cultas.

- Except -dor and nationalities, which add -a: encantadora, habladora, conservadora, española, francesa.
- Plural: vowel + s, consonant + es, -z → -ces (feliz → felices). Tiquismiquis never changes.
- Mixed group → masculine plural: Ana y Luis son chistosos.
